First set into standard form:

x^2-7x+8 = 0

the discriminant is b^2-4ac = 49-32=17

Now you try and plug that into the formula. After all, I know how to do it -- you need the practice
x^2 - 7 x = -8
or
1 x^2 - 7 x + 8 = 0

x = [ 7 +/- sqrt(49 - 32) ] /2

x = [ 7 +/- sqrt(17) ]/2

x = 1.44 or 5.56
