Use the nitrogen cycle diagram to answer the question.

Information
A diagram.Short description, A diagram.,Long description,
The diagram shows the processes by which nitrogen enters and leaves soil.

Nitrogen enters the soil from the atmosphere and from nitrogen-fixing bacteria located in root nodules of legumes. It also enters soil from animal waste and plants by decomposers, such as aerobic and anaerobic bacteria and fungi. This process is ammonification.
Nitrogen leaves the soil by nitrification, which is accomplished with the help of nitrifying bacteria. Nitrites, N O 2 negative, are changed into nitrates, N O 3 negative, by nitrifying bacteria. Plants absorb these nitrates. Animals get nitrogen from plants. Nitrogen also exits the soil by denitrifying bacteria, and then enters the atmosphere.

Question
A farmer rotates grain crops with an occasional alfalfa crop to boost grain production.

What can be inferred about alfalfa?

Answer options with 4 options
A.
Alfalfa allows soil to absorb water for future crops.

B.
Alfalfa roots can capture nitrogen from the air through photosynthesis.

C.
Alfalfa is a decomposer capable of releasing excess nitrogen into the air.

D.
Alfalfa develops nodules that house bacteria which enrich the soil with nitrogen.

1 answer

The correct answer is:

D. Alfalfa develops nodules that house bacteria which enrich the soil with nitrogen.

Alfalfa is a legume, and its roots contain nitrogen-fixing bacteria in nodules that convert atmospheric nitrogen into a form that is usable by plants, enriching the soil with nitrogen.
