Each trophic level has less energy than the level below it. This pattern is known as the 10% Rule and describes loss of energy between trophic levels.
In any ecosystem, the Primary Producer level has the most energy and the most biomass; the Tertiary Consumer level has the least energy and the smallest biomass.
If the Primary Producer level in this example represented 100,000 J of energy, the amount of energy in the Secondary Consumer level would be 1,000 J.
