The history of Thanksgiving goes back to the early 1600s. The first Thanksgiving was celebrated by the Pilgrims in 1621. Aftor a difficult winter, the Pilgrims had a good harvest and celebrated with a three-day feast. Native Americans, including the Wampanoag tabe, were invited to join in the feast. The first Thanksgiving was an important gathering where the two groups could get to know each other. The Thanksgiving tradition continued in the years that followed, but it wasn't until 1863 that President Abraham Lincoln declared Thanksgiving a national holiday in 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed a bill making Thanksgiving the fourth Thursday in November. Despite its long history, many of the traditions associated with Thanksgiving today, such as the turkey feast and parades, are relatively recent additions. Thanksgiving has remained an important holiday in the United States for centuries and is celebrated by millions of people around the world
