Use oxidation states to identify the element that is being oxidized in the following redox reaction:

Cu(s)+2
H
2
S
O
4
(aq) → CuS
O
4
(aq)+S
O
2
(g)+2
H
2
O(l)

You would make a lot more sense if you wrote it this way.
Cu + 2H2SO4 ==>CuSO4 + SO2 + 2H2O

Remember the rules.
Oxidation is the loss of electrons.
Cu is 0 on the left and +2 on the right.
S is +6 on the left and +4 on the right (with SO2)
H is +1 on left and right(doesn't change)
O is -2 on left and right(doesn't change)
