It is an old trick, I add that way. I just taught it to my third grader a couple of weeks ago.

8+5
eight is close to ten....
8+2 is ten, but if I add 2 to 8, I have to subtract 2 from five ...
8+2 + 5-2
10+3

Practice it. Remember: what you add to one number you have to subtract from the other.
