The Street
By Octavio Paz

Here is a long and silent street.
I walk in blackness and I stumble and fall
and rise, and I walk blind, my feet
trampling the silent stones and the dry leaves.
Someone behind me also tramples, stones, leaves:
if I slow down, he slows;
if I run, he runs
I turn :
nobody.

Everything dark and doorless,
only my steps aware of me,
I turning and turning among these corners
which lead forever to the street
where nobody waits for, nobody follows me,
where I pursue a man who stumbles
and rises and says when he sees me:
nobody.
Lyric - a type of poem that expresses the speakers’ feelings and has rhythmic, musical qualities

“Hope” is the thing with feathers
BY EMILY DICKINSON

“Hope” is the thing with feathers -
That perches in the soul -
And sings the tune without the words -
And never stops - at all -

And sweetest - in the Gale - is heard -
And sore must be the storm -
That could abash the little Bird
That kept so many warm -

I’ve heard it in the chillest land -
And on the strangest Sea -
Yet - never - in Extremity,
It asked a crumb - of me.

Here are two poems—one in Free Verse and the other in Lyric form—reflecting my feelings about the importance of environmental preservation.

Free Verse: "Whispers of the Earth"

The trees sway gently,
their leaves rustling like whispers
of stories untold,
as sunlight filters through branches,
casting dappled shadows on the forest floor.

I stand here,
breathing in the fragrance of damp earth,
the rich aroma of life,
realizing each breath is filled
with gifts from the towering giants,
who have stood guard through the ages.

But hear the silence,
the absence of bird songs,
once a symphony of color and sound—
now a lingering ghost in the air,
reminding me of what we stand to lose.

Yet, in the fading light,
a glimmer of hope flickers—
the resilience of nature,
its unwavering strength to rebound,
to reclaim its throne if only we choose
to listen, to act, to nurture.

Lyric: "Ode to the Ocean"

Oh vast and endless ocean,
your waves crash like melodies,
singing lullabies of ancient tales,
each swell a heartbeat of wonder,
each tide a dance of the celestial.

In your depths, the mysteries lie,
creatures darting in the shimmering light,
a world untouched, a haven of life,
yet you whisper secrets of our neglect,
as plastic dances in your embrace.

How I yearn to cradle your shores,
to cleanse your wounds, to mend your heart,
for you, dear ocean, give us so much,
from the depths of your blue, we breathe—
a reminder of our kinship with the wild.

Let us pledge to protect your grace,
to hear your call, your siren's plea,
for the future flows within your tides,
together, hand in hand, we shall strive,
to preserve your beauty, our precious gift.
