Unit 6 Sample Context Clues

Context is the text around a particular word. When you come across an unfamiliar word, ask yourself: “How is this word used?” (For example: to describe something.) Then, look for clues in the context to help you determine a possible meaning for the word. Look for these types of clues:

■ synonyms or definitions: words that mean the same as the unfamiliar word

■ antonyms: words that are opposite in meaning

■ explanations: words that give more information

Example: Paula feels apprehensive about her new school. She is worried that no one will sit with her at lunch.

Unfamiliar word: apprehensive

How is this word used? to describe how someone feels

Context clues: worried (synonym) and no one will sit with her (explanation) Possible meaning: anxious
