Question 18
"Nelly Bly Undercover"
by Dr. Howard Markel
Getting committed proved rather easy, even if neither Bly nor her editors had a clear plan of getting her released once the story was filed. She took a room at a cheap boarding house, “Temporary Home for Females, No. 84 Second Avenue,” under the name Bly Brown and began questioning and imitating the women who seemed most insane to her. Soon enough, it was Bly who was deemed crazy. The matron of the house enlisted a few cops to escort Bly to the Essex Market Police Courtroom, where an impatient judge named Duffy pronounced her insane and ordered her to the famed insane ward at Bellevue Hospital, the city’s largest charitable hospital. A few days later, she boarded a ferry boat filled stem to stern with unwashed and uncomprehending women for Blackwell’s Island, “an insane place,” one ambulance driver told her, “where you’ll never get out of.”
Taking careful notes of both her own experiences and those of her fellow inmates, Bly painted a dire picture in which 16 doctors were assigned to the care of some 1,600 inmates. “Excepting two,” she recorded, “I have never seen them pay any attention to the patients.” She also questioned the judge’s ability to pronounce a woman insane “by merely bidding her good morning and refusing to hear her pleas of release? Even the sick ones know it is useless to say anything for the answer will be that it is their imagination.” She also reported on the cultural insensitivity and language barriers experienced by immigrant women who spoke little or no English and a host of hostile and abusive treatments, from mandatory cold baths to confinement in small, damp, vermin-infested, locked rooms.

Question 19
"Deaf Poets Society: for Writers with Disabilities"
by Corinne Segal
Deaf Poets Society poetry editor Cyree Jarelle Johnson, who was diagnosed with lupus in college, said that the experience of being disabled can be “incredibly isolating” in a world that often views sickness as a tragedy.
Johnson noted that not all people who are deaf or have a chronic illness consider themselves disabled, and that the word “disabled” can encompass a wide variety of experiences.
“I think that there’s a misconception that sickness is inherently tragic, and I don’t feel like my life is tragic. I feel like my life is lovely. Sickness is a huge part of my life, but it’s not the only part of my life,” Johnson said.
In one or two sentences, describe how these details support a central idea of the text.

Question 20
"Pregnant Fossil May Shed Light on Animal Behavior"
by PBS NewsHour
Scientists have pieced together the first-ever fossil of a pregnant plesiosaur, a giant Mesozoic sea reptile from the Cretaceous Era, with an embryo still inside.
The animal, which roamed the seas 78-million years ago, is about 15-feet long—the length of a minibus—and bones indicate that the baby plesiosaur would have been as long as six feet when born.
The finding, published in the online edition of the journal Science on Thursday, is definitive evidence that the giant sea creature gave birth to single, live offspring, rather than laying eggs, like most reptiles, says paleontologist and lead author F. Robin O’Keefe. This reproductive behavior also indicates that the animals were gregarious social creatures that cared for their young, similar to toothed whales or dolphins, according to the paper.

Question 16 - Answer:
The best way for the person to describe the ingredients would be:
"Begin by gathering your ingredients. You need oats, milk, yogurt, and your favorite toppings. Strawberries and almonds are just a couple of possibilities. Vanilla and honey can also be used if desired."
Question 17 - Answer:
The sentence that would most likely be found in a letter that uses a friendly structure is:
"I just thought I’d check in to see how you and the crew are doing."
Question 18 - Answer:
Nellie Bly uncovered serious problems with the process for admitting people into the asylum and their subsequent release. She highlighted that women could be declared insane by a judge merely by greeting them, without listening to their pleas for release. Bly stated, "Even the sick ones know it is useless to say anything for the answer will be that it is their imagination," illustrating the lack of proper evaluation and consideration for the individuals' statements.
Question 19 - Answer:
The details in the passage support the central idea that the experience of having a disability can vary widely and that it is not inherently negative. Cyree Jarelle Johnson expresses that, despite living with lupus, she does not view her life as tragic but rather lovely, indicating that one's perspective on illness can differ greatly.
Question 20 - Answer:
In an objective summary of "Pregnant Plesiosaur May Shed Light on Animal Behavior," I would include key information about the discovery of the pregnant plesiosaur fossil, emphasizing that it provides evidence of live birth rather than egg-laying. This finding suggests that plesiosaurs exhibited social behaviors similar to modern marine mammals. However, I would not include speculative details or personal opinions about the significance of the findings beyond what the research presents. I would stick to factual information regarding the fossil and the implications of its reproductive behavior.
