Two machines at a factory are filling cans of soup. One machine has filled 92 cans of soup. It fills cans at rate of 16 cans per minute. The second machine has filled 104 cans of soup it fills at a rate of 13 cans per minute, and solve an equation to show when the two machines will have filled the same number of cans of soup

1 answer

Let x be the number of minutes it takes for the two machines to have filled the same number of cans of soup.

Machine 1: 16 cans per minute
Machine 2: 13 cans per minute

Number of cans filled by Machine 1 in x minutes = 16x
Number of cans filled by Machine 2 in x minutes = 13x

Given that Machine 1 has already filled 92 cans and Machine 2 has already filled 104 cans:

16x + 92 = 13x + 104
3x = 12
x = 4

Therefore, the two machines will have filled the same number of cans of soup after 4 minutes.
