to find 6x8, can I use the facts for 5x4 and 1x4

(5x4) + (1x4) is NOT the same as 6x8.
Lets look at it in detail:
6x8 = 48
5x4 = 20 and 1 x 4 = 4
20 + 4 = 24 which is not 48.
The most you could do is some factoring, but you have to make sure your numbers balance out.
For example,
considering 6 x 8.
Well 6 = 3x2
and 8 = 4x2
so 3x2x4x2 = 6x8
or in other words 2x2(3x4) = 6 x 8
or 4 (3x4) = 6x8.
