This question is really stressing me out. I don't even know where to start. The question is: The Northern Tier bicycle tour route from Anacortes, Washington, to Bar Harbor, Maine, is 4,264.5 miles long. How many more revolutions over the entire route will a 16 inch diameter wheel on a bike trailer complete when compared with a 27 inch diameter wheel on a bicycle?

I think the answer is 266.56 revolutions, but I'm not sure.. Can someone please help me by explaining me the answer step by step?

1 answer

One mile = 5280 ft = 5280(12) inches

each rotation of the smaller wheel = 32π inches
number of rotations = 4264.5(5280)(12)/32π
= appr 2,687,716

each rotation of the larger wheel = 54π inches
number of rotations = 4264.5(5280)(12)/(54π)
= appr 1,592,721

difference = 1,094,996 revolutions

how in the world did you come up with 266.56 ??
