The Supreme Court decision in Worcester v. Georgia affirmed that Native American tribes were sovereign nations and could not be subjected to state laws. However, this ruling was largely ignored by President Andrew Jackson and the state of Georgia, leading to the passage of the Indian Removal Act in 1830. As a result, thousands of Native Americans were forcibly removed from their ancestral lands and resettled in designated Indian Territory, primarily in present-day Oklahoma.
