1 A pupil placed some magnesium in a gas jar of oxygen How could the rate of reaction between these substances be increased increase the temperature, for example, by applying a match to the magnesium. In doing so, you are helping the Mg metal overcome the energy of activation by adding the energy of the burning match.

2 Complete the word equation for the reation
Mg + O2 ==> MgO. You balance.

magnesium and oxygen

3 How does the colour of the magnesium differ from the colour of the material left after the magnesium has reacted??
Did you do this experiment? If so you know the color you started with and the color of the final product. This should be in your notes. If you did not do the experiment, find a reference book or your text and look up the color of Mg metal and MgO.

a colour of magnesium at start

b Coulour of substance left after the reaction???

thanks but that is a little bit grown up for what i'm doing i haven't even heard of the stuff before ut thanks anyway oh i was looking for a much more simpler question i am only in year 7

Hi again,
I can talk to 7th graders, too. It would help if students would indicate their grade level. Here are some revised answers.

1 A pupil placed some magnesium in a gas jar of oxygen How could the rate of reaction between these substances be increased The speed of most reactions is increased by increasing the
temperature. This can be accomplished in your experiment with a lighted match to the magnesium.

2 Complete the word equation for the reation

magnesium and oxygen ==> magnesium oxide

3 How does the colour of the magnesium differ from the colour of the material left after the magnesium has reacted??

a colour of magnesium at start
It will be shiny with a metallic sheen if it has been poslished. If not polished, it is a grey metal, usually with an oxide coating from sitting in the air.

b Coulour of substance left after the reaction??? Magnesium oxide is a white, fluffy powder. I hope this helps a little. Be sure and repost if there is something you don't understand but explain fully what you don't understand about it.
