There were two opposing American opinions regarding expansion of U.S. territory after Spanish-American War: Anti-imperialists and Expansionists (Imperialists).

Anti-imperialists argued against expansion for some of these reasons:

Empire building went against the principles of democracy which the country was founded on
They feared competition from foreign workers
War was only justified when protecting the U.S., not trying to add new territories
Expansionists (Imperialists) argued for expansion for some of these reasons:

Would give the U.S. access to international markets
Open up new places to build naval bases
Would help establish the U.S. as a world power
In your opinion, which side do you agree with and why? Make sure to use one of the above reasons to support your opinion.

I agree with the Anti-imperialists' perspective on expansion after the Spanish-American War. They highlighted that empire building contradicts the fundamental democratic principles upon which the United States was founded. Instead of pursuing territorial growth, the U.S. should focus on protecting its existing values and interests. Moreover, the push for expansion often leads to conflicts that could detract from the country’s commitment to democracy and self-determination.
