There are fewer than 950 Bactrian camels left in the wild. Because of this, they are on the critically endangered list. These two-humped camels live in the Gobi and Takla Makan deserts of China. They can also be found in China's Lop Nur region. The fact that the Bactrian camels can survive in the Lop Nur region is astonishing. It is a very harsh environment. The only water in Lop Nur is salt water. All the fresh water in the area has evaporated. These camels are the only mammals there. Luckily, the Bactrian camels can drink salt water. Even more amazing is that China performed nuclear testing in this region for 41 years. The camels were able to survive the nuclear testing.
