A Rhea feels when her volcano hits the floor.
A. Gautam
Chapter 2
“How could you?” Rhea told Rosy, her eyes filled with tears as she watched her volcano on the floor. “It . . .it took me a week. Just watch where you’re going.” Rhea bent to pick up the pieces of her class project, not letting Rosy help her.
Rosy stood there, still willing to help. “I am sorry. I didn’t mean to,” she said. “Can I. . ?”
“Just go away,” Rhea said, almost shouting.
Chapter 3
After school, Rhea sobbed and stayed in her room all evening. She did not know that Rosy had come to her house, talked to her mother, and found out how exactly Rhea made the volcano. Rosy asked Rhea’s mother not to tell Rhea about the visit and said she was sorry. All the while, Rhea kept thinking about excuses to skip school. She didn’t want to go to the fair. She did not want to see Rosy. She hated everything.
Chapter 4
On the day of the science fair, Rhea pretended to stay asleep. She faked a cough. But, her mom would not take a no. She took Rhea to school.
Rhea quietly walked to her class, where she saw a volcano on her desk. It was a little smaller than the one she made. But, there was a note on it as well. It said sorry.
Rhea looked around and finally saw Rosy, focused on her Solar System. Rhea thought about how hard Rosy must have worked to finish two projects. If I hadn’t scared her off, she would have offered to help me, Rhea thought. Rhea felt something different now. It was a mix of guilt and sadness. She kept thinking about the ways to make it up to Rosy.
