specifies the principal shell of the orbital, however, I would not use the word "shell", as it misleads...energy orbital level is a better term. Surely you are not being taught that electrons are "orbiting" the nucleus like tiny planets. https://www.quia.com/files/quia/users/panderle/Schrodinger_2 Electrons can be any of those "orbitals", anywhere at any time, and the location at one point of time is not predictive of location an instant later. They are not in orbits.
