The Polynesians were able to travel long distances across the Pacific Ocean, sometimes traveling up to 2,000 miles at a time. This was possible because they used their knowledge of the stars, ocean currents, wind patterns, and the flight patterns of birds as navigational tools. One effect of these long-distance voyages by the Polynesians was the spread of their culture, language, and technology to other islands throughout the Pacific region.
