Explain the difference between figurative meaning and literal meaning.

Give an example of each.
The figurative meaning of a word or phrase refers to a non-literal or metaphorical interpretation, while the literal meaning refers to the straightforward, dictionary definition of a word or phrase.

Example of figurative meaning: "It's raining cats and dogs." In this expression, the figurative meaning is that it is raining heavily, but there are not actually literal cats and dogs falling from the sky.

Example of literal meaning: "The book is on the table." In this sentence, the literal meaning is that a book is physically located on a table.
The Navajo are an indigenous group of people who live in the Southwestern United States. Explain how a book about the Navajo written by a historian would be different than an autobiography written by a person who is Navajo. Use details to support your answer. Write 1-2 sentences.

Hint: Your answer should explain which piece of written work would be subjective versus objective.

BoldItalic
A book about the Navajo written by a historian would likely provide an objective perspective, as the historian would rely on research, facts, and analysis to present an unbiased account of the Navajo culture and history. On the other hand, an autobiography written by a Navajo person would offer a subjective perspective, sharing personal experiences, emotions, and insights from their own perspective as a member of the Navajo community.
Japanese snow monkeys bathing in hot springs are something to see. They have attracted tourists for years.

The monkeys live in Jigokudani Monkey Park near Yudanaka, Japan. They have become known for their bathing habit.

After reading the article, write a 5 sentence summary about the main idea and supporting details of the article.

Don't forget to use formal language including correct spelling and grammar.
No other macaques have been seen bathing in the same way. Macaques are a group of more than 20 kinds of monkeys that live in Africa and Asia.

Scientists thought that this behavior had a simple explanation. The monkeys are cold. Dipping in the hot springs helps them keep warm during winter. After all, winters can be harsh in northern Japan.

However, scientists did not have the data to back up this idea. So, scientists at Kyoto University in Japan recently set out to study the snow monkeys of Jigokudani. They wanted to learn why the animals bathe in the hot springs.

Hot Springs Are A Good Way To Keep Warm

The snow monkeys live further to the north than any other nonhuman primate. In other words, they live in the coldest climate of all nonhuman primates. The primates are a group of mammals that include some of the most intelligent animals. The major kinds of primates are apes, like humans and chimpanzees, in addition to monkeys and lemurs. Scientists believe that snow monkeys in Jigokudani keep warm by growing longer and thicker fur in winter.

The group's fondness for warm baths was first reported in the winter of 1963. A young female snow monkey was seen in an outdoor hot spring that belonged to a hotel near Jigokudani. Soon, other monkeys were joining in. They disappeared when the weather started to warm up. The monkeys returned the following winter.

Health concerns arose about people and monkeys using the same springs. The Jigokudani park decided to build a hot spring for the monkeys. The animals now bathe there regularly in the winter months.

Thinking that the monkeys use hot springs to keep warm, the Kyoto University team tested the animals' poop for levels of glucocorticoids. Glucocorticoids are substances in the body linked to stress. Previous studies have shown that low temperatures cause glucocorticoids to increase in many primates. Japanese macaques are among them.

Scientists tracked 12 grown females in two seasons of the year. One was the spring birth season, from April to June. The other was the winter mating season, from October to December. The results of their study, published recently in the journal Primate, showed that the snow monkeys used the hot springs more often in winter.

More Warm Baths Mean Less Stress

The study team also found out more about the winter months. The monkeys had lower levels of glucocorticoids during weeks that they bathed. The levels were compared to weeks they did not bathe there. It appeared that the monkeys' stress levels were lower in weeks that they bathed in the hot springs.

Dominant females had higher stress levels than the others. It was thought to be because these leaders did more fighting to keep their top position. However, the dominant snow monkeys also spent more time in the hot springs. More time was connected to lower glucocorticoid levels. The leader monkeys got extra time in the springs because of their high social standing.

"This indicates that, as in humans, the hot spring has a stress-reducing effect in snow monkeys," Rafaela Takeshita said. She is a scientist at Kyoto University. Takeshita is also lead writer of the new study. The monkeys' hot-spring baths show how adapting can help fight the stress of living in a cold climate, she said.

Unlike many humans, the monkeys did not seem to mind strangers getting up close during their bath time. Over 500 visitors flock to Jigokudani every day to watch the monkeys in the hot springs. The scientists found that their presence seemed to have no effect. The animals' stress levels did not go up.
The main idea of the article is that snow monkeys in Jigokudani, Japan, have a unique behavior of bathing in hot springs during the winter, which helps them keep warm. The article discusses how scientists at Kyoto University conducted a study to understand the reason behind this behavior. The study found that the snow monkeys have lower stress levels when they bathe in the hot springs, and this especially benefits the dominant females who have higher social standing. The scientists also found that the monkeys' stress levels were not affected by the presence of visitors during their bathing time. Additionally, the article mentions that macaques are a group of monkeys found in Africa and Asia, and that snow monkeys live in the coldest climate among nonhuman primates. The Jigokudani Monkey Park built a hot spring specifically for the monkeys due to health concerns about them sharing hot springs with humans.
