The Old Lion and the Fox

K. Reiter

A very old lion lay in his dark cave. His teeth and claws were worn, and he could not catch food like he was able to when he was younger. He devised a plan to fill his belly without going out to hunt.

The old lion lay in the cold cave and pretended to be sick. He was sure to inform all his neighbors, so they would tell the others. Visitors would come to visit the old lion to offer sympathy. When they would enter the cave, he would eat them up.

The sly fox came to visit the lion, but he was very cautious. He stood outside the cave instead of going in.

“How are you feeling?” he yelled to the lion.

“I am very ill indeed. Step inside if you will.” replied the lion.

The fox said that he would like to enter, but he had noticed that there were many footprints going into the cave, but none coming out.

“Tell me,” began the fox, “how do your visitors get out?”

The best choice for the paragraph illustrated by the picture would likely be B (paragraph 3). This paragraph describes the fox being cautious and standing outside the cave instead of going in, which suggests that there may be an illustration showing the fox outside the cave, interacting with the lion without entering.
