The Life Cycle of a Plant
All plants, including trees, follow a similar life cycle. A plant's life cycle shows how it changes and grows throughout its life.
A plant starts out its life as a seed. A peach seed, which is the pit inside the fruit, is large and brown. When it is planted in healthy soil full of nutrients and water, it breaks open and starts to grow. This stage is called germination.
Next, roots grow down into the ground, while a sprout grows up and becomes a seedling with a stem. The roots take in water and nutrients from the soil, and the stem carries the water and nutrients to other parts of the young tree.
As the tree grows bigger and stronger, leaves begin to grow from the stem. The leaves are very important because they take in sunlight and turn it into food.
A peach tree produces beautiful flowers that turn into fruit with a seed inside. Some peaches fall to the ground, and the seeds get planted naturally. Other peaches get picked and eaten—then the seeds might travel large distances and new peach trees might grow in new places! In any case, new seeds will germinate and the cycle will undoubtedly continue.
