The large intestine is much shorter than the small intestine, but it is wider. One of the main functions of the large intestine is absorbing water from digested food back into the body. This makes waste products more solid. It also prevents us from becoming dehydrated. Waste is then stored in the large intestine until peristalsis moves the waste to the rectum, the last part of the large intestine. Then it passes out of the body through the anus, resulting in elimination. From start to finish, digestion can take up to three days.
