The Importance of Being Earnest

Act I, Second Half

Why and How does Jack plan to kill off his “brother”?

1 answer

Jack plans to kill off his "brother" Ernest because he wants to create a situation where he can escape the responsibilities and expectations of his alter ego while still maintaining his own reputation and standing in society. He plans to send Ernest to Australia, a dangerous and remote location, where he believes he will likely meet his demise. Jack chooses Australia because it is far enough away from England to make it difficult for Ernest to return and challenge Jack's deception. Additionally, by "killing off" Ernest, Jack can rid himself of the burdensome and troublesome persona he has created, allowing him to live a more honest and carefree life as Jack.
