The Hiking Trip
(1) Ashley tried to keep pace with her family as they walked up the narrow mountain path. (2) Ashley's family was visiting a national park, and they would be camping there for the night. (3) It was a hot summer morning and sweat was trickling down her face as she stopped to catch her breath. (4) Ashley's mom turned around and said, "Ashley, we have to move quickly, or we won't get there in time."
(5) Hiking isn't as much fun as I thought it would be, Ashley said to herself. (6) As Ashley slowly resumed walking behind her mom, she could see vast meadows spreading over the mountains like a green carpet, and tall, dark trees stretching high into the clear, blue sky in the distance.
(7) "We are almost there," said Mom, pointing at the campground ahead. (8) The distant roar of a waterfall lifted Ashley's spirits, and her excitement doubled as the sound grew louder.
(9) As soon as they reached the camp site, Ashley dropped her backpack and sought the sound of the rushing water. (10) When she reached the spot, Ashley stood still for a moment, dazzled by the spectacular sight in front of her. (11) The water tumbled down the hill and crashed on the huge black rocks below, forming a band of white foam in the pool at the bottom. (12) A dense foliage of broad green leaves and colorful spring blossoms surrounded the waterfall, and she could see the rocky bed of the pool through the crystal-clear water. (13) The air was filled with the sweet fragrance of the spring flowers, and Ashley giggled with delight as tiny splashes of icy cold water fell on her face.
