The fourth major category of important macromolecules is nucleic acids. Two types of nucleic acids are: DNA (Deoxyribonucleic Acid) and RNA (Ribonucleic Acid).
b. Nucleic acids are macromolecules that hold the genetic information to build and maintain an organism.
c. The building blocks of nucleic acids are nucleotides.
d. A nucleotide is made up of three parts: i. A phosphate group (PO₄) ii. A sugar (the sugar in DNA is deoxyribose, and the sugar in RNA is ribose) iii. A nitrogen-containing molecule called a nitrogenous base.
iv. Each nucleotide (in DNA) can contain one of different bases. These bases are:
- Adenine (A)
- Thymine (T)
- Cytosine (C)
- Guanine (G)
