The Earth's inner core is a solid metallic sphere located at the center of the planet, beneath the outer core. It is primarily composed of iron and nickel, and has a diameter of about 1,220 kilometers (760 miles).
The inner core is under incredibly high pressure, estimated to be about 3.6 million times the atmospheric pressure at sea level, and is also extremely hot, with temperatures reaching up to 5,500 degrees Celsius (9,932 degrees Fahrenheit).
Despite the high temperature, the inner core remains solid due to the immense pressure. The intense heat of the inner core, along with the outer core's convective motions, creates the Earth's magnetic field, which extends throughout the planet and protects it from harmful solar radiation.
