The common bile duct and the pancreatic duct merge to form the hepatopancreatic ampulla, also known as the ampulla of Vater. This structure empties into the duodenum at a location called the major duodenal papilla (or papilla of Vater). This area is important because it is where bile from the liver (via the common bile duct) and digestive enzymes from the pancreas (via the pancreatic duct) are released into the small intestine to aid in digestion.
