The Ball
Lisa, Karen, Betty, and Ruth let out a sigh of dismay as they peered over the fence and saw the ball lying between two flowerpots in the garden next door. Maria's shoulders drooped slightly as she dropped the bat. She walked toward the fence to see if she could drag the much-desired object without having to go next door. Maria could see Mr. Roger's face pressed against the window, and he seemed to be waiting to see what the girls would do.
"Of all the places, it had to fall right inside the garden now when the game had gotten so intense!" mumbled Maria to her friends.
"If we don't get it, we won't be able to practice for the next few days. That was the last ball we had," said Lisa.
"So, are you going to do it?" asked Lisa, Karen, Betty, and Ruth in unison.
