Using basic physics, a cold setting would cause gasses to slow down and compact itself, allowing for more and more molecules of gasses to fit into the atmosphere. what determines the size of the atmosphere ultimately depends on the gravitational pull. a higher gravitational pull would have a larger atmosphere because it can collect more gasses compared to a planet with a weaker atmosphere, which can only collect so many gas before losing its grip
