The Alien and Sedition Acts

In 1798, Federalists in Congress passed the Alien and Sedition Acts. President Adams signed them into law. The word alien described people from other countries who were living in the United States but who were not U.S. citizens. Sedition is behavior that encourages people to be disloyal to the government.

The Alien and Sedition Acts were meant to address the belief that France was becoming an enemy of the United States. Federalists also hoped that the Alien and Sedition Acts could help them control the speech and actions of Democratic-Republicans.
