Phrase - A group of words that does not contain a subject and a verb, and does not express a complete thought.
Independent Clause - A group of words that contains a subject and a verb, and expresses a complete thought. It can stand alone as a sentence.
Dependent Clause - A group of words that contains a subject and a verb, but does not express a complete thought. It must be attached to an independent clause to form a complete sentence.
Simple Sentence - A sentence that contains one independent clause and expresses a single complete thought.
Complex Sentence - A sentence that contains one independent clause and at least one dependent clause.
Compound Sentence - A sentence that contains two or more independent clauses, joined by a coordinating conjunction or a semi-colon.
Compound-Complex Sentence - A sentence that contains two or more independent clauses, and at least one dependent clause.
