Gender inequality is a social justice issue that refers to the unequal treatment and opportunities between individuals based on their gender. This issue is important and pressing to learn about because it affects individuals across all aspects of life, from education and employment to healthcare and political representation. According to statistics from the Canadian Women's Foundation, women in Canada earn on average 87 cents for every dollar earned by men, and they are more likely to experience poverty, violence, and discrimination. Additionally, a UN Women press release highlights that the world is failing girls and women, with only 25% of parliamentarians worldwide being women. This lack of representation perpetuates gender stereotypes and limits progress towards gender equality. The Covid-19 pandemic has also exacerbated gender inequalities, as seen in a global study reported by The Guardian. Women have been disproportionately burdened by caregiving responsibilities and job losses, further widening the gap between genders. Overall, understanding and addressing gender inequality is crucial for creating a more equal society where all individuals have equal opportunities and rights, regardless of their gender.
Vocabulary list:
1. Sexism: Discrimination, prejudice, or stereotyping based on a person's sex. This can manifest in many forms, such as unequal pay or limiting career opportunities based on gender.
Why is it important for being an ally: Understanding this will allows individual to advocate for equal rights for all gender
2. Gender Stereotypes: Harmful assumptions about how individuals should behave based on their gender, limit people to traditional roles and expectations, such as women being nurturing and emotional while men are strong and stoic.
Illustration: Teachers may assume that boys are better at math and science while girls are more suited for art and literature, reinforcing the stereotype that boys are naturally more inclined towards STEM fields.
Why is it important for being an ally: It helps to break down harmful expectations that contribute to gender inequality. By recognizing and addressing stereotypes, allies can promote a more inclusive and equitable society for all individuals.
3. Gender pay gap: The different in earnings between men and women in the workplace
Step 4: Due: June 1
Consolidate and communicate
Find a current event that is related to your social justice issue.
Briefly explain the event
Explain how the event is connected to each of the words/phrases you chose.
Event: The US Women's National Soccer Team's lawsuit against the US Soccer Federation for gender discrimination.
The US Women's National Soccer Team filed a lawsuit against the US Soccer Federation, alleging gender discrimination in terms of pay and working conditions. The team argued that despite their great success and popularity, they were being paid significantly less than the men's team.
This event highlights the persistent issue of gender inequality in sports, where female athletes are often paid less and have fewer opportunities than their male counterparts.
The unequal pay between the men's and women's soccer teams also reflects the gender stereotypes that devalue women's achievements and contributions in sports. The assumption that men's sports are more valuable and deserving of higher pay perpetuates harmful gender stereotypes.
The lawsuit brought to light the substantial pay gap between male and female athletes in professional sports, emphasizing the need to address and rectify this disparity. This event underscores the broader issue of gender pay gap that exists across various industries and fields.

For example, you can discuss how Canada has passed laws such as the Pay Equity Act and the Gender Equality Week Act to address gender pay disparities and promote gender equality in the workplace. In addition, you can mention how Canada has implemented programs and initiatives to support women's empowerment and leadership in various sectors, such as the Women's Entrepreneurship Strategy and the Gender-Based Analysis Plus (GBA+) tool.
Furthermore, you can discuss how the Canadian government has committed to advancing gender equality through international agreements and partnerships, such as the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action and the Sustainable Development Goals. Highlighting Canada's efforts to promote gender equality domestically and globally can showcase the government's commitment to upholding rights and freedoms related to gender equality.
By incorporating these examples and discussing the Canadian government's actions related to gender inequality, you can effectively connect your social justice issue to the Canadian government and rights/freedoms in your presentation.
