Spider-Woman to the Rescue (adapted from a Hopi Creation Myth)

L. Hernandez

The Spider-Woman goddess named Kokyangwuti [Koh-kyang-woo-tee] created the plants and trees out of clay. She also used clay to make all the animals, including birds, insects, mammals, and fish. Finally, she created humans out of clay.

The first world inhabited by the Spider-Woman’s creations was burned in a great fire after humans began to argue with each other and point out their differences. The Spider-Woman led only a few of the humans, those who valued each other’s differences, into a second world.

The humans in the second world were grateful for Spider-Woman’s help. They worked together and planted crops of food to stay alive. However, after many years they started to become very selfish and greedy. They wanted many things they didn’t need and started stealing from each other. The gods were not happy. They made the world so cold that nearly everything froze. Again, the Spider-Woman came to help only the most generous and humble people. She led them to the third world.

In the third world, people prospered. They had plenty to eat and began to spread to different parts. Because there were now so many people, they began to separate into groups. Eventually, these groups began to fight, and a war took place. The gods returned, angry at the humans, and sent a terrible flood. Spider-Woman distributed boats made of bamboo to the kindest and friendliest of the humans. She filled the boats with food so that those humans would survive.

Months passed, and when the waters cleared, Spider-Woman placed a tall bamboo in the center of the world. The surviving humans came to the bamboo pole and climbed it. When they reached the top, they saw a brand-new world. This was the fourth world. The gods warned them to be kind to each other, to work hard, and to only keep what they needed. This is where the humans still live.

The best statement that paraphrases a concept presented in both "Spider-Woman to the Rescue" and "Pan Gu and Nuwa" is:

C Humans were created out of clay by a goddess.

This statement aligns with the creation aspect emphasized in both myths, as Spider-Woman created humans from clay, similar to how the goddess Nuwa from the "Pan Gu and Nuwa" myth is known for creating humans.
