Soon after Lincoln's election, several Southern states decided to secede. The seceded states joined together to try to form a new country called the Confederate States of America, or the Confederacy. Not all the Southern states joined the Confederacy right away. Many of the states in the upper South, such as Virginia, were undecided if they should join the Confederacy or stay in the Union. Eventually, 11 slave states seceded and joined the Confederacy.
