Solving equations simultaneously:

.7*x+.30*y=33.1
(x*y)/(.7*y+.30*x) = 3.66

I get stuck after I get 51.972=45.2y-.42y^2
I know the answers are supposed to be
x=2.6 and y=104

1 answer

Hmmm. I don't get that solution at all.
Clearing fractions,

xy = 2.562y + 1.098x
substituting from the first equation, that makes
x(33.1-.7x)/.3 = 2.562(33.1-.7x)/.3 + 1.098x

2.3333x^2 - 115.213x + 282.674 = 0
x = 2.58926 or 46.7879
y = 104.292 or 1.16157

Looks like our solutions agree fairly closely. Typo in problem? Error in supposed answer?
