Solve each linear equation by substitution. The answer is suppose to be (-2, -4) Thank you for your help.

{-5x+3y=10
x-4y=14

1 answer

{-5x+3y=10 is this bracket { significant?
how can the answer be (-2,-4)?---> try plugging in(-2,-4) for (x,y) in the first equation:
-5 (-2) + 3(-4) = 10
10-12 = 10 ----> this doesn't make sense
i would do this:
x-4y=14
so...
x = 4y +14
-5 (4y +14) + 3y = 10
-20y - 70 +3y = 10
-17y = 80
y = (- 80/17) approx. -4.71
x - 4y = 14
x- 4(-4.71) = 14
x + 18.84 = 14
x = -4.84
hope this helps :)
