when you make the denominators 24 , you have to similarly adjust the numerators to maintain the value of the fraction
... this is the "renaming" process
4/8 is equal to 12/24 ... they both reduce to 1/2
So, im doing a math lesson right now and taking notes. one of the examples makes no sense to me. The example is, 4/8+5/12. Here is where it gets confusing. The first step is to, rename the fractions using the LCD, 24. I made the denominator 24. The next step is to, add the numerators and place the sum over the common denominator. The math problem that they have makes no sense, it is 4/8+5/12=12/24+10/24. Can someone please explain to me how they got 12 and 10 when it said to add the numerators?

4/8 = 12/24
24 / 8 = 3
3 * 4 = 12
5/12 = 10/24
24/12 = 2
2 * 5 = 10
Now add the numerators. 10 + 12 = 22
24 / 8 = 3
3 * 4 = 12
5/12 = 10/24
24/12 = 2
2 * 5 = 10
Now add the numerators. 10 + 12 = 22
Thank you for the help!
