Large amounts of heat or transferred to earths mantle from earths core and the mantle itself. Heat and pressure inside the mantle called solid mantle rock to warm and slowly flow toward the lithosphere. When the rising rock cools it sinks back through the mantle. This process occurs over millions of years.
