simplify: (sinx/cosx)-1/(cosx/sinx)-1

I too am slightly frustrated, since I can't tell which order of operation to follow with your placement of brackets

is it sinx/cosx - [1/(sinx/cosx)] - 1 ??

if so, you have

tanx - 1/cotx - 1
= tanx - tanx - 1
= -1
(sinx/cosx-1)/ (cosx/sinx-1)
(tan x -1) / (1/tan x - 1)

(tan^2 x - tan x) / (1 - tan x)

tan x (tan x - 1)/(1 - tan x)

-tan x
