The moon hung high in the sky, casting an ethereal glow over the darkened forest. I could feel the chill in the air as I stepped cautiously among the towering trees, each crunch of dried leaves beneath my feet echoing through the night. It was supposed to be a simple late-night adventure; a chance to shake off the stress of school and immerse myself in nature’s embrace. Little did I know that tonight would change everything I thought I knew about the world.
I paused to catch my breath, my heart racing slightly—not just from the brisk walk, but from the creeping sensation of being watched. I didn’t want to believe it; I couldn't. Stories of vampires whispered through my childhood, always painted with fear and curiosity. But standing before me were boys who looked impossibly young, their features sharp and beautiful but edged with an undeniable predatory sophistication. I had to get away before they noticed me. I turned to bolt back the way I came, a primal instinct kicking in.
"Where do you think you're going?" a voice cut through the night, deep and smooth, lingering in the air like silk.
I froze. My heart thundered against my rib cage, and I glanced back over my shoulder. There he was—Taehyung. He stepped forward, the moon casting a silver light on his face, highlighting his sharp jawline and striking eyes that seemed to pierce right through to my soul. But it was the way he looked at me, a mixture of amusement and intrigue, that held me captive.
“I—I’m just out for a walk!” I stammered, forcing a laugh that sounded more like a nervous squeak.
“Out for a walk this deep in the woods?” he smirked, tilting his head slightly. “You should know it’s dangerous here at night.”
“Dangerous?” I echoed, my voice shaking, the realization of what I was speaking to sinking in. “You... you’re a vampire.”
At that, the lightness in his laughter faded, and the others around him—Jin, Jungkook, Jimin, and Hoseok—turned their gazes on me, a mix of expressions playing across their chiseled faces. The air was thick with tension and unspoken understanding. I was in their realm now, and fear gnawed at my insides.
“Very perceptive,” Taehyung said, his voice low, a hint of something darker hiding beneath his charming facade. “But you should really relax, Maria. We won’t hurt you.”
“How do you know my name?” My instincts kicked into overdrive—the hairs on my arms stood on end as I stepped back, ready to escape.
“Let’s just say we’ve noticed you,” Jin replied, his tone calm but firm. “You’re quite the little explorer, aren’t you?”
“Not anymore!” I turned to run, but before I could take a step, Taehyung was suddenly right in front of me, moving with such speed it bewildered my senses. He was a predator, and I was the prey.
“Don’t!” he commanded, holding his hands up, palm facing me. “We really don’t want to frighten you. Please, just listen.”
“I’m not sticking around to get eaten!” I shot back, breathless. Panic surged through my veins as I realized I was trapped, caught between instinct and curiosity.
“I promise we don’t eat humans,” he said, the sincerity in his voice momentarily calming my frantic heartbeat. “Well, most of us don’t.”
“You expect me to believe that?”
“I’ve tasted human blood," he said, the gravity of his admission hanging between us. “But it bores me now. I choose to survive on... less forbidden pleasures.” His eyes sparkled with mischief, yet his serious demeanor remained.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” I asked, biting my lip, fighting the urge to back away further. I was entranced and terrified all at once.
“It means,” he leaned a little closer, “that I’m more interested in you than any evening snack. You intrigue me, Maria.”
“Why?” The question slipped out before I could rein in my thoughts.
“Because you’re fearless, coming out here alone,” he replied, his tone shifting to something softer. “And frankly, you’re the most human thing I’ve encountered in a long time.”
“Those compliments won’t work on me, vampire,” I said, trying to muster up bravado, feeling my cheeks flush.
“Maybe not,” he chuckled, and I found myself smiling despite the circumstances. “But here’s the deal: you stay with us, and I promise no one will hurt you. Our world is dangerous, but I’ll protect you."
"Protect me? From what? You?" I shot back, sarcasm spilling over as I took in the absurdity of the situation.
“No, from other supernatural things that would take advantage of someone like you.” His eyes darkened, and I could sense the weight behind his words.
Just then, Jungkook stepped forward, arms crossed. “You have to understand; we don't just let anyone wander into our territory. You've seen too much already. “
“And what if I refuse?” I challenged, a flutter of defiance resonating in my chest, though deep down I knew that my curiosity was beginning to outweigh my rational fear.
“You can’t refuse, Maria,” Taehyung said, his gaze unyielding but somehow warm as he took a step closer, invading my space. “We don’t give up on those who pique our interest, and you’re far too valuable to let go.”
My breaths caught in my throat as his raw intensity wrapped around me. It challenged everything I thought I knew about safety, about the boundaries between our worlds. Here I was—an ordinary girl in the presence of extraordinary beings. And yet, with his gaze locked onto mine, I felt strangely... drawn to him.
“I don’t understand why you’d want me around,” I murmured, the depth of his expression holding me captive against my better judgment.
“Because, Maria,” Taehyung replied softly, “you might just be the key to bridging our worlds.”
I realized in that moment I was no longer just a curious girl exploring the forest; I was a player in a game that stretched beyond the mortal realm, with stakes I couldn’t yet comprehend. Whatever lay ahead would push the boundaries of my reality, and somehow, I found myself wanting to see more, wanting to venture deeper into the shadowy corners of their world.
“Aren’t you the least bit scared?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.
“Terrified,” he admitted, crossing the distance between us, daring and delicate. “But I won’t let that fear guide me, and I don’t want it to guide you either. So, what do you say? Want to join us for tonight’s adventure?”
I hesitated, my heart pounding as I weighed the risks and rewards. I could run again, back to my ordinary life; or I could step into the unknown where danger danced with excitement.
“Fine,” I finally relented, unexpected confidence swelling within me. “But if you plan to eat me, just know I bite back.”
He laughed, a sound rich with warmth and something unspoken. “I wouldn’t have it any other way, Maria.”
And with that single choice, my path toward a world filled with dark love, danger, and creatures of the night began, igniting a flame in my soul I never knew existed. Little did I know just how much my life would change—and how much Taehyung intended to protect what was now his.
