Family Computer User Accounts Setup
Overview: To create a safe and productive environment for all family members using the new computer, we will establish four distinct user groups with specific permissions and restrictions tailored to each group's needs. This setup will help regulate computer usage effectively while providing age-appropriate access to applications and the internet.
User Groups and Permissions:
-
Adult User Group (You and Adult Family Members)
- Account Type: Administrator
- Permissions:
- Full access to install and uninstall programs.
- Ability to change system settings and manage other user accounts.
- No restrictions on application or website usage.
- Screen Time Limits:
- No specific limits. Adult users can use the computer at any time.
-
Middle School User Group (Two Middle School Siblings)
- Account Type: Standard User
- Permissions:
- Permission to install programs that do not require administrative rights (e.g., educational software, games). However, installations that require admin approval would need to be requested from an adult.
- Access to homework and educational websites.
- Screen Time Limits:
- Allowed usage from 3 PM to 8 PM on weekdays.
- Allowed usage from 10 AM to 9 PM on weekends.
- Blocked Applications/Websites:
- Social media platforms (e.g., Facebook, Instagram) and explicit content should be blocked.
- Only whitelisted gaming apps (if applicable) should be allowed during screen time.
-
Youngest Sibling User Group (Child Account for the Youngest Sibling)
- Account Type: Child User Account
- Permissions:
- Access to age-appropriate educational games and applications.
- Cannot install any programs without adult approval.
- Screen Time Limits:
- Allowed usage from 1 PM to 6 PM on weekdays.
- Allowed usage from 10 AM to 7 PM on weekends.
- Blocked Applications/Websites:
- All social media and adult content.
- Specific non-educational games and applications are also to be blocked.
-
Guest User Group (Family Visitors)
- Account Type: Guest Account
- Permissions:
- Limited access to internet browsing and basic applications such as a web browser and offline document viewers.
- Cannot install any software or change system settings.
- Screen Time Limits:
- Access granted during visitor hours only (9 AM to 9 PM).
- Blocked Applications/Websites:
- All sensitive family files and content will be restricted.
- Access to the family’s personal information should be blocked.
Admin Rights:
- Admin rights will be exclusively reserved for the adult user group to ensure control over security settings and to manage the configuration of other accounts. This prevents unauthorized changes made by younger users.
Conclusion:
This structured approach enables a secure and fluid environment that balances responsibility and freedom for all family members. By setting these parameters, we can ensure that the computer serves as a suitable tool for education and entertainment while safeguarding the youngest users and maintaining control of vital system functions.
