Scientists working with endangered species must understand the habitats of the animals they are protecting. With the rare Kirtland's warbler, a migratory bird with an expansive territory, attaining this knowledge presents challenges. José Martí, the man depicted on the statue, was a journalist, poet, and Cuban patriot. He gained notoriety through his writing. which expressed discontent towards Cuba's government, resulting in his exile from Cuba and his eventual relocation to New York City. While in New York, Marti wrote for English and Spanish newspapers about the need for Cuba's independence. The man-made King's Cross Pond in London was constructed to resemble a traditional swimming pool from above, but below the water, swimmers were able to experience the sandy base of a natural pond. The pond's design was intended to control algae growth and impurities without relying on potentially toxic chemicals. To achieve this, the pond's creators painstakingly cultivated a combination of water plants that eliminated the need for a mechanical circulatory system or continual chemical treatments. Wetland plants protruded above the pond's waterline, while additional aquatic plants flourished beneath the surface. The system efficiently removed impurities from the water, provided the pond was occasionally vacated. For this reason, the pond temporarily closed whenever 160 swimmers had entered the water within a twenty-four-hour period.
