MICHAEL: (squinting) Who in the world could that be?
He walks down the creaky steps of the porch and approaches the car cautiously. The driver's side door opens, and an attractive woman in her mid-thirties steps out. She is wearing a stylish sun hat to shield her fair skin from the hot sun.
WOMAN: (smiling) Hello there! I'm looking for Michael. Is that you?
MICHAEL: Yes, that's me. Can I help you with something?
WOMAN: (extending her hand) I'm Laura, your new neighbor. I just moved in next door. I wanted to come over and introduce myself.
MICHAEL: (shaking her hand) Well, welcome to the neighborhood, Laura. It's nice to meet you. I'm Michael.
LAURA: (looking around) It looks like you've been working hard out here in this heat. Is there anything I can do to help?
MICHAEL: (grinning) Actually, there is. I was just about to take a break and have some lemonade. Would you like to join me?
LAURA: (smiling) I would love to.
They walk back up the porch steps, and Michael pours another glass of lemonade for Laura. They sit in the rocking chairs, sipping the cool drink and exchanging stories about their lives. The sun starts to set, casting a warm glow over the porch.
MICHAEL: (content) Thank you for stopping by, Laura. It was nice getting to know you.
LAURA: (smiling) Likewise, Michael. I think we're going to be great neighbors.
They both laugh and continue chatting as the night falls, forming a new friendship under the summer sky.
SCENE I.-Michael wipes his sweat-drenched face with an old rag for what feels like the thousandth time this morning. The porch fan is on its highest setting, but it does nothing to relieve the air of its heavy, stickiness. The glass of cool lemonade he had poured in the kitchen is dripping condensation onto the old, brown wicker table. He rises from the
rocking chair as he sees a bright red car pull into the driveway.
