SCENE 1

[A park. Nadine is cycling on her new bicycle. Her sister Bess is sitting on a bench watching her. Allison is running behind Nadine.]
NADINE: [Excitedly makes a quick turn.] See, now I can ride so fast!
ALLISON: Hey! Don't swerve too fast. You may lose balance. Be careful. You've been riding for so long. Can I ride the bicycle for a while?
NADINE: [Shaking her head.] Sorry, Allison. I need to get back home to work on my project. Also, it's a new bicycle, and I'm afraid I don't want anyone to break it.
ALLISON: I won't break it, Nadine. I'll be really careful.
NADINE: Sorry, Allison. I'm too nervous to let anyone ride my new bicycle.
ALLISON: Oh, OK.
[Bess hears the conversation and looks disapprovingly at Nadine.]
BESS: Nadine, do you remember the time you wanted to wear my new shoes?
NADINE: Yes, I do, but I still do not want Allison to ride my bicycle.

SCENE 2

[Bess and Nadine are walking back home.]
BESS: Remember how you pleaded with me, wanting to use my new ballet shoes for the dance, even though you had yours? I allowed you to use mine, didn't I?
NADINE: [Pauses for bit.] Yes, you did, and that was very sweet of you.
BESS: Now I want you to allow Allison to ride your bike. I don't want you to tell her no. Mom and Dad would tell you the same thing, too. If they find out that you didn't allow your best friend Allison to ride your bike even for a short while, they would be very disappointed.
NADINE: Hmmm. . . Well, considering how kind you were to lend me your shoes, I guess I can let Allison ride my bicycle, too.
BESS: Yes! Good girl! When I let you wear my shoes, didn't you feel I cared for you? Now make Allison feel you care for her.
[Both exit the stage.]
