Sam, The Flying Squirrel

Once upon a time, a long, long time ago, on a spring morning, Sam the Squirrel woke up tot the beautiful sounds of a robin singing. Sam couldn’t sing. He couldn’t fly either, like robins could. Sam wanted to fly away into the sky like a bird in the wind, without a care in the world. That night the Squirrel Genie appeared to Sam in a dream. Sam told him what he wanted to do: fly and sing. The Squirrel Genie said she would grant him a wish, but he could only have one of those wishes. The next morning when Sam woke up, he stretched out his arms as he yawned and lost his balance. He began to fall to the ground from his home in the oak tree. Suddenly, as he fell, he caught some wind and flew to the next tree without any effort at all! He didn’t fall and land on the hard ground or get hurt. Sam’s wish has been granted. To this day, Sam’s relatives, the flying squirrels, live in the U.S. on the East Coast and in some Northern states.
