Tom is three times as old as Sam. So when Sam is 20, Tom will be three times as old as that. Multiply 20 by 3 and you will get 60. So when Sam is 20, Tom will be 60.

Just because at some point you are 3 times as old as your brother,
e.g. 15 vs 5
in five years that ratio is no longer 3:1 but rather 2:1
15 + 5 = 20
5 + 5 = 10
ratio = 20/20 = 2 and not 3
