Saccharin (C7H5NO3S) is sometimes dispensed in tablet form. Ten tablets with total mass of 0.5860 g were dissolved in water. They were oxidized to convert all the sulfur to sulfate ion, which was precipitated by adding an excess of barium chloride solution. The mass of BaSO4 obtained was 0.5282 g. What is the average mass of saccharin per tablet? What is the average mass pecent of saccharin in the tablets?

1 answer

mass BaSO4 = 0.5282
mols BaSO4 = grams/molar mass = estimated 0.00226 but you need to do it more accurately. The other number below are estimates also.

mols BaSO4 = mols saccharin
g saccharin = mols x molar mass = about 0.42g.
That's for 10 tablets so make that about 0.042 g/tablet.
%saccharin = (total mass sacc/total mass sample)*100 = ?
