Rubbing Alchol often contains propanol, C3H7OH. Suppose that you have an 85.9g sample of propanol.

a) Howmany carbon atoms are in the sample?
b) Howmany hydrogen atoms are in the sample?
C)Howmany oxygen atoms are in the sample?
PLEASE!! explain the steps to me...I don't know how to get the answe for these questions.
Thankyou! Your help is appreciated!:)

Calculate the number of moles of C3H7OH in 85 grams. One mole is 60 g.

So you have 85/60 = 1.417 moles

Multiply that by Avogadro's number for the number of propanol molecules.

Each molecule contains 3 C atoms, 8 H atoms and 1 O atom.
How do you know one mole is 60grams..and by 85 you mean 85.9grams right?
And how do you calculate the number of moles of C3H7OH in 85.9grams?
Please explain the steps to me....
You have apparently not learned how to compute the molecular weight of a compound. Here's how: Add up the atomic weights of all atoms in the molecule. For C3H7OH, that is (12*3) + (7*1) + 16 + 1 = 60.

I used 1 for the atomic weight of H. Actually it is 1.008. A more accurate molecular weight of propanol is 60.0064

Yes, the 85 should have been 85.9

There are 85.9/60.0064 = 1.4315 moles

The remaining steps have already been explained.
But then how do you get the atoms of each individual element...can you please explain that part... Im sorry...
Get them from the chemical formula. In this case, it is C3H7OH. There are 3 carbon atoms, one O and eight H's in that formula.
