Roosevelt was a member of the party when he served as vice president to William McKinley who was elected on a pro-business agenda. After McKinley's assassination, Roosevelt shocked the American public with his support for the progressive movement started " " trusts. ' His "Square Deal" promise became his platform and got him re-elected in 1904. After Roosevelt's second term, William Taft became the next president and served four years. President Taft had a more conservative view of the role of the presidency which Roosevelt. After the party re-nominated Taft for a second term, Roosevelt created a third party, the Party and ran for president again, against Taft. This split the republican party and resulted in winning the election of 1913.
